The wine of the DO Valdeorras closes an historical sale in the Brazilian market

Source: La voz de Galicia

The cooperatives Jesus Nazareno from O Barco -covered by the DO Valdeorras appellation- along with Viña Admiral de Portas from Rías Baixas, have closed an historical sale of wine in the Brazilian market. Both companies have joined forces to sell, in a single order, 50,000 bottles of wine.

The business deal was hatched five years ago, after that the two companies participated  in Expovinis, the most important wine fair in Brazil. There, they came into contact with the wine club of Latin America, which has 25,000 members and headquarters in Sao Paulo.

The business deal has been closed with the club, which will hold a major promotional campaign. Viña Almirante and Jesus Nazareno will be the protagonists of  an article for the publication of the Latin American club, and the wines will come out on the market in a box containing two bottles.

The cooperatives expect that this deal will be first of many more in the future with the Brazilian market,  and are confident that their work will serve "to put a spear in this market" and to "increase Galician wine sales in this country."

To reach the agreement, both wines have had to overcome strict controls and a series of tough tastings. Both brands are called to make history in a difficult market, which from now on will enjoy with the excellence of a wine of the DO Valdeorras appellation.

The DO Valdeorras presents its toasted wines

After four years of research and successful in a previous tastings, there are new developments in the project being conducted jointly by the Regulatory Council Valdeorras and University of Vigo for for obtaining and recovery the toasted wines from Valdeorras.

A total of twelve tasters have found yesterday the achievements of researchers in the framework of the optimization of aroma and color in the process of obtaining the toasted wine from grenache grapes.

The experience, which takes place in a experimental winery at Regulatory Council, has consisted in a tasting to: a liquor wine, a dry wine and a toasted wine, and all this, it has completed with a comparison of these wines and others with similar characteristics from different regions of world (Portugal, Austria, Hungary and South Africa) to collate and evaluate the organoleptic qualities of the toasted wine from Valdeorras.

The meeting was focused to a toasted wine tasting panel with a important representation of the wineries attached to the Valdeorras Guarantee of Quality , since, as reported by project managers, "Now is the time for growers know the characteristics of these wines and their implementation, daring to produce the toasted wine for the market".

This is to recover a product with a long international tradition of century-old , as evidenced by the award given to these wines by those responsible for the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900.

The international wine trend is committed with fresh and light wines that invite to drink

The new culinary trends are driving a paradigm shift in the wine world. The search for fresh and light wines that replace those more powerful, open a new and very promising field of maneuver for the Galician wines.

The new culinary trends, based on the subtlety of flavors, reaffirm their international commitment with fresh and light wines that invite to drink. This propensity has settled internationally in countries with a strong wine culture, ranging from the hand of culinary refinement. Thus, it is not unusual that in the U.S., France and Italy, among many other countries, this new trend is established since several years.

Spain is an atypical case. As maker of one of the best wines in the world, consumption is reduced to just over 16 liters per person per year. One of the lowest figures in the European community.

What is failing to produce this?

There are many opinions concerning this case. Redound, a large majority in the loss of the traditional custom of eating with wine. With this reference there is a new question that could be stated as follows:

Does the new kitchen which takes place in Spain is not in line with the traditional bottled wine consumption?.

The answer comes almost unanimously by the most prestigious Spanish avant-garde chefs and summarized in the headline of this article.

Spanish wine consumption has to shift to a softer product, reaffirming in this way, as a complement to our delicious cuisine.

The logical evolution leads to fresh and elegant wines, which, in turn, do not mask the subtlety of the food as seasoning essential to achieving greater enjoyment of the dishes. A wine in a glass that invites you to drink another, avoiding a result of heaviness.

Spanish winemakers large groups are aware of this and have begun to focus their tendency toward this new horizon. Now, it can only be presented to the consumer this option that surely will be a more than notable form.

Meanwhile, in Galicia, the producers have been working for a long time following this pattern. This fact is a true reflection of the widespread triumph of Galician wines internationally. An example of this is shown by the gastronomic guru Eric Ripert .

A step further, with an eye in the near future, shows us that soon it will be spoken about a revolution in winemaking, in which, as it has been commenting on this blog for several months, the names of Galician Apellation of origin, in general, and Valdeorras in particular, will play a role in the new wine world culture.

The international industry praises the enological revolution of Valdeorras with an imports increase of 93%

The cellars of the Valdeorras Guaranty of quality almost doubled its exports in 2011, comparing with the previous year. The volume of 166,469 liters sold abroad is 93% greater than 86,196 liters of 2010, according to the data gathered by the Regulatory Council of the bottlers. Only the period of 2007, with 209,577 liters, is larger than this last campaign.

As for the types of wines exported, 106,757 liters were of the white variety and 59,712 were red wines. These figures show the good period of the godello variety, which are the grapes that top the consumers' preferences of the above two named varieties.

The American continent is the largest market for valdeorras wineries. To this land were sent 68,643 liters. More than half, 47,022 liters, were white. This variety has found in the U.S. market an intenresting customer, by consuming 42,262 liters. The European Union, with 42,327 liters, ranks the second in the list of importers. Generally, buyers show a strong preference for whites, as shown by the acquisition of 38,599 liters of such wines. By the contrary, the rest of Europe prefers the red wines, with a purchase of 28,868 liters of this variety.

United States and Switzerland, with 49,834 and 31,845 liters respectively, are the largest importers. This fact fully justifies the foreign cities chosen by the Regulatory Council to present their wines. On October 24th, a dozen cellars presented their wines in Zurich (Switzerland). Five months earlier, on May 19th, seven bottlers brought their wines to the 'Great Match' in Dallas (USA).

"The promotional events organized by the Council were scheduled for those countries that reflect the major exports and have a larger number of purchases', said the President of the Valdeorras Regulatory Council, Jose Luis Garcia Pando.

The Regulatory Council refers to a favorable combination of 'quality, price, raw material and development' to justify the wines' success of the Guarantee of Origin. A proof of this are the awards and the mentions by enology experts. The last success was achieved by the "Godeval winery" for its wine 'Godeval 2010'. It was ranked in the 71st position of the 100 best wines in the world by the prestigious American magazine 'Wine Spectator', being the only Spanish white wine.

"It's not a surprising. We had already been highly valued, "said Horacio Fernandez Presa, Godeval's technical director. The Valdeorras' winery has its major markets in the U.S., Canada, China, Japan and the UK, exporting 40% of a production of 150,000 bottles. This percentage exceeds widely 4% the production intended for exports.

For its part, the Valdeorras' winery 'A Coroa' is well-consolidated in Asia, getting a remarkable silver medal in the contest named "Best Spanish wines to Asia", held in Hong Kong. Thus, the Valdeorras godello achieved a deserved recognition for its quality, standard-bearer for the effort that some wineries have been doing over several years by to be known in new markets.

As this happens, the commitment of the DO Valdeorras with its followers is evident with new mariage bets, so you can enjoy with these magnificent wines at its finest essence.

The single variety Sousón, a jewel to be exploited.

"Today we would like to share with all the followers of Mother of Wine this interesting article about the variety Sousón. We would also like to ecommend you to visit the IvinOurense blog, as to enjoy the interesting articles uploaded about the world of wine in this Galician province."

Galicia, land of amazing wines, great diversity of terroir, climate, heights and hundreds of native varieties, lost and forgotten by the fashion and trends.

One is these is the magnificent red variety Sousón. This is one of the most difficult varieties to grow. One of the difficulties is that it is a long cycle one, which means it reaches its optimum ripeness in October. Furthermore, we must add that it is very sensitive to sudden changes in temperature, sunlight, pests, rain and autumn frost, and all them condition its development. The clusters are small sized and conical shape, with its shoulders very compacted, skin thin and very bloom. Of course all this fragility and delicacy combined with its high content in tannins and acidity make up these red elegant wines, with the subtlety of its grapes which few are able to boast, as they are ripe and have and intense bouquet of powerful aromas.

However, those days to put aside the varieties that used to give problems were left behind and we can be very proud of the efforts made by the Galician winemakers to recover the local varieties, which are surprising and seducing the most demanding palates of the world wine scene.

Until recently it was unthinkable to find a 100% single varietty of wine Sousón, and even it may seem strange, since the usual practice was to use this range as complementary to other varieties.

Wines made from the variety Sousón, with a uniqueness that is worthwhile to be drunk and appreciated.

Caco Cuvée 2007 VX Sousón, of the Coto de Gomariz Winery is a great example of the consolidation of this noble variety. Xosé Luis Sebi is the winemaker who directs this amazing creation and perhaps the man who best knows the behavior of this strain.

Quinta Muradella Sausón is developed by José Luis Mateo. This man is undoubtedly one of the young winemakers that with his very little wine production, is achieving the perfection the terroir and native varieties.

Viñaredo Sousón, afterwards the recovery of small plots of Sousón strain, born this unique wine cellar located in Santa Marta, a beautiful town of Valdeorras, led by the winemaker José Moreno Galindo. Despite being its second vintage, it can be seen that there is great potential on it.

Although Sousón is a gem to explore, with these three great examples of different terroirs already consolidated, it seems to be clear that return to the past is the best innovation.

Considering that today wine is made in almost all corners of the world and also that the consumer is increasingly sophisticated, knowledgeable and want to enjoy, have fun and try wines that express the terroir identity, there's where Galicia has a great role because it has a great diversity of native varieties, climate, soil and so on.

And do we must not forget that in a bottle of wine, regardless the grape variety and the area where is developed, there is something else inside, which is our culture, climate, rivers, the smells of the slopes, in short our way of living and understanding the wine.

Aging on lees settles in Galicia

The technique used in the aging on lees, while not new, is gaining strength in recent years in Galicia.

This technique, which gives the white wines more structure in the mouth and volume, is the aging of the wines after fermentation, in those parts fine of yeast dead. Through this process the wine is achieved with a longest life cycle, with more body and more complexity on the palate.

This process is optimized by the sensitive technique of "batonage" which is to suspend the lees during aging for wines with more fat, with the potential of fruit, better balance structure / fat, and above all much more stable against to oxidation.

In Valdeorras highlights several wineries producing wines using this technique, including Virxen de  Galir Godello with lees. Learn more about the winery, by clicking here.

Data from the 2010 harvest in Valdeorras

The official amount of grapes harvested is 4,330,292 kilos, a considerable decrease in quantity compared to last year. Not in quality, where the technical chief of the Denomination of Origin, Jorge Mazaira, described as very good quality grapes.

With the arrival of the last grapes to the winery of A Rua "Rafael Palacios" was closed in the last hours a harvest that began on September 7 Valdesil cellar.

The untimely winter devastated the area of Valdeorras this season, led the outcrop of diseases afflicting mainly the varieties Alicante and Jerez, considerably reducing its production to a figure of around 620,648 and 433,992 kilos respectively. Varieties being more significant in the region, Godello and Mencia, which better withstand the elements, maintaining production at levels similar to previous seasons with 1,737,071 and 1,515,003 kilos.

It should be noted that this vintage is the highest level of health they enjoyed the grapes at the entrance to the wineries. The fruit that managed to overcome the winter diseases, led to an optimum level of maturity due to high summer temperatures and dry endorsed by the soft rains of early September. All in all, are expected to add 2010 about wines of great quality, both in the DO Valdeorras as in the rest of designations Galicia.
